A Political Poem

Who painted red white and blue on my love life?

We went on dates and held hands

We kissed in the snow and sent chills up warm backs.

Who’s lobbying for wrapping necks like birds

and touching souls so close they blur?

Which congressman decides if we can

            butterfly or Eskimo kiss,

            or kiss on the lips

while flowers bloom and burn in bliss…?

How do they vote on passion

                                    love

                                    beauty

                                    sex?

No, don’t put your democratic lens

on my body next to hers

on my inhales of her exhales

on my neck craned to the sky

tell me

WHY

Is this political?

Next time you debate the rights of 2 lovers,

Leave my name out of your policy-smitten mouth.
